Pakistani Sarees

The saree has a long history in Pakistan, especially in Karachi, and today it’s worn above all as formal and evening wear: at dinners, receptions, Walimas and family weddings. The Pakistani saree has a character of its own. Fabrics lean towards chiffon, net and organza, the embroidery tends to concentrate on a heavy border and pallu, and blouses are often cut with elbow-length or full sleeves. Pakistani saree or Indian saree?

The drape and the basic structure are the same: a long length of fabric, a fitted blouse and a petticoat. The difference lies mostly in the styling. Pakistani sarees tend towards lighter fabrics, heavily embroidered borders and pallus, more covered blouses and solid colours finished with metallic or pearl work. Choosing a saree as a guest

Colour works much as it does for any guest outfit: avoid bridal red at the Baraat, and choose something clearly different from the bride at the Walima. Black, navy, bottle green and wine sarees with silver or gold borders are classic for evening receptions, while pastels in chiffon suit a daytime event. The blouse matters as much as the saree. A longer blouse with sleeves looks more formal, is easier to wear all evening and keeps the look modest if the family prefers more coverage.
