Yellow Mehndi Dresses for Brides

Yellow is the colour a Pakistani bride wears before her wedding. It begins with the Mayun, when she’s anointed with ubtan, the turmeric paste that gives the ceremony its colour, and carries on to the Mehndi, when henna is applied and the whole family celebrates. A yellow Mehndi outfit can be a lehenga, a sharara, a gharara or a lacha-style skirt, usually trimmed with gota, mirror work or contrasting borders in green, orange or pink. Mayun or Mehndi: two different yellows

At the Mayun, the bride is usually seated while relatives apply ubtan to her face and hands, and turmeric stains whatever it touches. That’s why many brides wear a simpler, lighter yellow outfit for the Mayun, often cotton or lawn with minimal embroidery, and save the embellished piece for the Mehndi. The Mehndi outfit can be much richer, with heavier gota, mirror work, a contrasting dupatta and a fuller silhouette for dancing.

Which yellow?

Turmeric yellows are warm and traditional, closest to the colour of the Mayun itself. Mustard is deeper and more forgiving under evening lighting. Lemon and pastel yellows feel fresh and modern, especially for a daytime or garden Mehndi, though they need contrast to stand out. Marigold edges towards orange and looks wonderful against the flowers that decorate most Mehndi stages.

Colours to pair with yellow
