Gown or maxi: what the names mean

In Pakistani bridal wear the two words overlap. « Gown » tends to mean a more structured piece, with a defined waist, a fuller skirt and a longer trail. « Maxi » is often used for a flowing full-length dress with less structure, sometimes open at the front over a lehenga or trousers. Both rest on the same idea: one long silhouette instead of a separate top and skirt, with a dupatta over the head or draped across the arms.

Which wedding day suits a gown?

The Walima is where Pakistani gowns are seen most. The mood is lighter than at the Baraat, and colours like ice blue, silver, blush, mint or champagne come into their own; our Walima dresses show the whole range for that day. For the Nikkah, an ivory or pale gown with a long dupatta works well, especially if the ceremony is at home. Gowns appear at the Baraat less often, but a deep red or maroon gown with heavy gold work is a real alternative to the lehenga for brides who want to move freely.

Trail, weight and comfort

A long trail photographs beautifully and makes an entrance, but picture the day as it will actually go. You’ll walk between rooms, step up onto a stage, sit for photographs and eat. A moderate trail you can gather in one hand is easier than a very long one that needs someone walking behind you. Heavy embroidery also adds real weight, because a gown hangs from the shoulders and waist. If you’d like a shorter trail, raise it before you order; length can be adjusted on most designs.
