The Mangni is a family occasion first

Depending on the family, the Mangni happens at home, in a hall or at a restaurant, anywhere from a few weeks to a year or more before the wedding. Rings are exchanged, sometimes gifts and sweets as well, and it’s often the first time both families are together in full. In some families the groom’s side gives the bride-to-be her outfit, so the person ordering isn’t always the one who’ll wear it. If that’s you, get her measurements or usual size before you choose.

For the bride-to-be: colour and silhouette

An engagement outfit has to hold its own in the ring-exchange photographs while leaving the big moments to the Baraat and the Walima. Many brides-to-be choose light or luminous shades (peach, blush, mint, lilac, champagne) and keep deep red for the Baraat. A bolder colour works too, as long as it doesn’t repeat what you’ll wear later.

A lehenga is the most traditional choice, provided it’s clearly lighter than your wedding one; browse the bridal lehengas with the less heavily worked pieces in mind. A gharara, fitted to the knee and then flared, feels more traditional. A pishwas, the long, very full dress descended from the Mughal peshwaz, suits you if you want a single flowing piece that stays comfortable for hours.

For family and guests

The bride-to-be’s mother, sisters and closest relatives usually dress a notch above an ordinary invitation, without competing with her. For a daytime Mangni or one held at home, formal outfits are plenty. For a large reception in a hall, the outfits chosen for wedding guests give you more range. Some families coordinate colours between sisters or cousins; if yours does, order at the same time so the delivery dates line up.

Planning every outfit from the engagement onwards

The Mangni outfit isn’t chosen in isolation. Vary colour and embroidery weight from one ceremony to the next, because these photographs will be looked at side by side for years. A reasonably restrained engagement outfit is also easy to wear again later, as a guest at someone else’s wedding.

Lead times: guest outfit or bridal-range piece?

Delivery depends on what you choose. A guest outfit arrives within 18 calendar days, production included. A bridal-range piece is made after you order and delivered free within three months at most; Rush brings that down to 30 days (€59) and Super Rush to 14 days (€199).
