Maroon Nikkah Dress – Farshi Lehenga

The Maroon Nikkah Dress is a three-piece Farshi lehenga in maroon, with red as an accent colour and embroidery across the full shirt front, full sleeves, back shirt borders, dupatta borders and full lehenga ghera.

What distinguishes the design is the relationship between the deep maroon ground and the lighter metallic and pastel embroidery tones worked across it.

The Quiet Majesty of Maroon

Maroon is less a colour than a mood. Red is bright and quick; maroon has the settled seriousness that belongs only to the moments when a life actually turns. It is wine that has sat long enough to darken at the bottom of the decanter — deeper, slower, a little heady. A Nikkah is that same kind of moment: not noise, but a held silence with its own beauty.

On this dress the artisan did not so much run a needle through cloth as write a prayer on it. The gold rises from the chest and spreads towards the hem the way bougainvillea climbs the wall of an old haveli. Where silver and paler tones come through, they read like moonlight over a gold sea and give the eye somewhere to rest. That is the skill in it: the work is heavy, but it is not oppressive.

Gold on a wine-dark ground follows the logic of Mughal painting — a deep background with light written across it. When the bordered dupatta is drawn over the head, the face sits inside it like a stone set in a gold arch. Ideal for a Nikkah, and no less at home at a Baraat.

In the photographs the model wears a gold choker with strands of emerald — the old agreement between red and green. Kundan and polki would work as well, or the soft white of pearls, or drops of ruby. The jewellery is styling only and is not part of the outfit, and each choice opens the dress differently.

Colour and Thread

The embroidery palette is antique gold, copper, gold, silver and pastel multi against the maroon base.

The warmer metallic tones create contrast from a distance, while silver and pastel details become more apparent at closer range, adding variation across the heavily embroidered surface.

Dabka, kora, nakshi, resham thread work, sequin work, spray work, zardozi, zari work and Salma Sitara are used across the embroidered areas, together with crystals, pearls and sequins.

Three Pieces, Three Surfaces

The shirt is net and silk lined, with a length of 38 to 44 inches. The lehenga is Jamawar, and the dupatta is chiffon at 3.5 yards.

The combination creates visual contrast between the three surfaces and gives the embroidery a different character across the outfit.

The dupatta length allows it to be styled over the head and across the shoulder as part of a bridal drape.

The Farshi Silhouette

As a Farshi lehenga, the skirt reaches the floor with a circular full ghera. An attached cancan is included and helps keep the ghera open while supporting the flare.

The long shirt covers more of the skirt than a short choli would, creating a longer vertical line before the silhouette opens at the hem.

The trail is optional, so the back view can be adjusted: add it for a longer rear profile or leave it off for easier movement.
